Nursing Home Care

For many years, Perth’s charity relief has operated through referrals from social workers, hospitals, the Chinese community, and local networks, creating a care model that combines immediate assistance with ongoing follow-up. During winter and Christmas, volunteers conduct review visits every six months to deliver warm clothing and daily necessities to households in need. At Christmas, they also visit nursing homes to hold festive activities and accompany elderly residents during the holiday season. Emergency assistance for backpackers is also one of Perth charity work’s key focuses.

Tzu Chi Perth began nursing home visits to Hamersley in July 1997. In March 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic sweeping the globe, this continuous 23-year care activity had to be suspended. In 2024, volunteers persisted in asking again and received permission to resume the visits.

Lively and cheerful music began to play, breaking through the usual quietness. Volunteers held songbooks and spread out to sit beside the elderly residents.

One lady happily hummed along to every song while tightly holding a volunteer's hand. Each time a page was turned in the songbook, she would quickly find the volunteer's hand again and hold it tightly, as if worried that this happy moment might disappear if she wasn't careful.

Over twenty years have passed, and the former Tzu Chi Youth have now established families and careers, bringing the next generation to volunteer.
