Providing vital care, companionship, and practical relief

As guided by Dharma Master Cheng Yen, “To purify human hearts, we must begin by deeply cultivating our communities.” Walking this path, we seek to put into practice the spirit of unity within Tzu Chi, inspiring each person in the community to take part in acts of kindness. Compassion and care rely on the strength of collective goodwill. As we look ahead, nurturing a caring community becomes ever more essential. When hearts come together as one, there is warmth, strength, and vitality. To reflect on how we may take root in the community with sincerity is a responsibility we share.

In Sydney, Tzu Chi volunteers uphold the spirit of “reaching out with care and cultivating goodness within the community,” dedicating themselves to ongoing acts of compassionate service. They walk into different corners of society as the Master envisioned—like “thousand hands and thousand eyes”—quietly offering care, protection, and companionship to those in need. Volunteers accompany families facing challenges, individuals receiving home care, elderly people living alone, and new migrants, gently responding to their needs with understanding and respect.

As society continues to evolve, so too does Tzu Chi’s way of caring. What began as material assistance has gradually extended into heartfelt companionship and humanistic care. Through sincere presence and listening hearts, volunteers hope to help bring clarity where there is confusion, and peace where there is unease, allowing lives to rediscover stability and quiet joy. Through home visits, community gatherings, health education, and humanistic activities, volunteers work hand in hand, nurturing the community with love. In this way, compassion becomes a living practice, love flows gently among people, and together we move toward a more harmonious and caring society.

Issa, originally from Syria and in his thirties, is a permanent resident of Australia. In July 2025, he sustained a spinal injury while lifting heavy materials at a construction site and was hospitalised for three months. After his discharge, reduced compensation and a monthly rent of around $400 placed him under financial strain. Not wishing to worry his family back home, he chose not to share his situation and quietly carried the burden on his own.

Through a refugee support centre, Issa was introduced to Tzu Chi. Volunteers began visiting him regularly, bringing warm meals, fruits, and bread each week, offering steady companionship over the past six months. Through this gentle and continuous care, not only was his physical need supported, but his heart was gradually comforted.

Ms Xiangyan Liu, a Tai Chi teacher, has been living in public housing in Gladesville for over 20 years. Tzu Chi volunteers have been visiting and accompanying her for the past six years, bringing small gifts each month as a gesture of care and warmth. During the Lunar New Year, they also present her with a Jing Si calendar, sharing blessings for the year ahead.

She actively participates in Tzu Chi’s annual events, including the Lunar New Year Blessing Ceremony, Buddha Bathing Ceremony, and the Seventh Lunar Month observances. Through these gatherings, she experiences a sense of peace, connection, and spiritual comfort. This enduring companionship has become not only a source of daily support, but also a meaningful bond of the heart.
