Guided by Compassion: Rooted in Melbourne for Three Decades
Since its establishment in 1996, Tzu Chi Melbourne has consistently upheld the spirit of "great compassion for all, great mercy beyond borders." For nearly thirty years, our charitable footprints have never ceased.
Our services include emergency assistance for international students and working holidaymakers, disaster relief, ongoing case management, and food distributions for refugees and vulnerable families. The volunteer team adheres to the core principles of "timeliness, warmth, and respect," offering genuine companionship to those in hardship.

Disaster Relief: Stepping Into Disaster Zones to Comfort Hearts
As climate change escalates, extreme natural disasters have become more frequent. Whenever disasters strike, Tzu Chi volunteers are among the first to step into communities, bringing reassurance and hope:

2009 "Black Saturday" Bushfires
Facing Victoria’s worst bushfire disaster in a century, Tzu Chi volunteers mobilised swiftly. The team deployed over 400 volunteer shifts, accumulating more than 1,100 service hours. Working closely with government agencies, volunteers reached out to nearly 70 senior citizens over the age of 70 whose homes had been completely destroyed.
In addition to providing over 60 relief blankets and care packages, Tzu Chi distributed nearly AUD $74,000 in financial aid to assist almost 90 affected residents. The assistance covered essential home items such as heaters, air conditioners, water tanks, washing machines, and ovens, as well as structural repairs including concrete laying, skylight and canopy installations, septic tanks, and chainsaws, substantially easing the rebuilding burden for elderly survivors.
2019–2020 Bushfires and Flood Relief
In response to consecutive fire and flood emergencies, volunteers visited affected regions door-to-door to offer care, emergency financial aid, and cleanup assistance, helping residents navigate their darkest hours.
During the 2019 bushfires, Tzu Chi mobilised nearly 380 volunteer shifts, reaching 41 impacted households (69 residents). Alongside dozens of warm blankets, scarves, and medical kits, nearly AUD $48,800 in emergency aid was distributed.
During the combined bushfire and flood disasters in 2020, Tzu Chi deployed over 200 volunteer shifts, expanding aid to 173 affected households (380 residents) with more than AUD $225,600 in relief funds.
Protecting the Community During the Pandemic: Spreading Warmth Amid Adversity
From March 2020 to October 2022, as healthcare systems and communities faced immense strain during the COVID-19 pandemic, Tzu Chi volunteers mobilised nearly 250 volunteer shifts. Volunteers hand-sewed over 1,000 cloth masks, hundreds of face shields, and protective hoods at the chapter office, while also procuring 24,000 medical masks and over 100 blankets.
These protective supplies were distributed across 60 local institutions, including public and private hospitals, nursing homes, police stations, homeless shelters, special development schools, food banks, and temples.
In the later stages of the pandemic, to support families facing economic hardship, volunteers initiated fresh produce distribution programs, ensuring vulnerable households felt the warmth and care of society.
Walking with the Community: Gathering Hope and Goodness
For thirty years, Tzu Chi Melbourne has walked alongside local residents. Whether confronting sudden disasters, severe pandemics, or daily life struggles, volunteers remain dedicated to infusing hope, warmth, and goodness into the Melbourne community with gentle hearts and practical actions.
