Tree Planting

Restoring the Earth, one tree at a time

Tree Planting Day

Tree Planting Day - Involving children in environmental initiatives enhances their understanding of its importance

The Australian Government organises National Tree Day each year during the winter rainy season, encouraging the public to participate in environmental protection. Since its first participation on 29 July 2012 at a national park in southern Adelaide, the Tzu Chi Buddhist Compassion Relief Foundation has remained committed to local ecological restoration efforts. Tzu Chi’s involvement in tree planting stems from Dharma Master Cheng Yen’s philosophy: “To bring blessings to humanity and safeguard the Earth, one must begin with oneself.” In response to the challenges posed by climate change and ecological degradation, volunteers engage in the fundamental act of giving back to nature through tree planting and land protection.

Since 2017, Tzu Chi has partnered with the Mount Barker District Council to restore local ecosystems. Over the years, this collaboration has revitalised areas such as Laratinga Wetlands and Mount Barker Creek, leading to the planting of more than 20,000 native trees, shrubs, and grasses across nine sites in the region. This effort promotes sustainable practices throughout the Mount Barker district.

Tzu Chi's tree‑planting initiatives serve both as ecological restoration projects and community education programs. Participants, including families, teenagers, and residents from diverse backgrounds, engage in these activities, demonstrating the remarkable potential for trust and collaboration among people of all ages. Every action, from the initial digging to the careful watering, establishes the foundation for a resilient ecology that can thrive for generations to come.

Additionally, Tzu Chi advocates for vegetarianism during its events by providing volunteers with healthy and delicious vegetarian meals. Participants often express that the flavours and variety found in vegetarian cuisine are rich and satisfying. Through a vegetarian diet, Tzu Chi aims to inspire the public not only to care for the environment but also to adopt a healthier and more compassionate lifestyle.

The collaboration between Tzu Chi and the local government embodies a core belief: protecting the environment is the most fundamental expression of care for humanity. Each tree planted symbolises the realisation of a kind intention, and every contribution plays a role in creating a more sustainable future for our planet.
