Nursing Home Visits in Adelaide

Bringing warmth to elderly hearts

Nursing Home Visits

Since July 2013, Tzu Chi Adelaide has been engaged in volunteer work caring for seniors in nursing homes. This continuous monthly companionship has become one of the most stable community care initiatives in the area. Seeing the loneliness and lack of family visits among many elderly people, Tzu Chi volunteers, upholding the spirit of "paving the way with love and treating people with heart," entered nursing homes to bring warmth and care to the elderly.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic brought an unexpected pause between 2020 and 2022, the return of these visits in 2023 has made every moment even more cherished.

For years, volunteers have been consistently involved, often bringing their children along, just as the Jing Si Aphorisms remind us: "Cultivate kindness, and persevere in good deeds."

The purpose of care in nursing homes lies not only in visiting but in building bonds that span years and long-term companionship. Through regular monthly visits, volunteers build stable and deep emotional connections with the elderly. Activities include singing and interactive activities, sign language performances, and festive celebrations, allowing the elderly to rediscover the colour of life in familiar melodies and warm smiles. This intergenerational participation also teaches Tzu Chi Youth and young volunteers invaluable lessons about empathy, respect and care for the elderly from a young age, and to experience the joy of giving through interaction.

As the Jing Si Aphorisms say, "Giving without expecting anything in return brings joy." And indeed, in each shared song, each conversation, each hand gently held, both the elderly and the volunteers discover something profound—the softest yet strongest part of life that awakens when compassion is put into action.

It is not only about nail polishing but also about the long-term spiritual companionship of volunteers.
