Love Food Fair
Plant-based food for sustainable future
Promoting Vegan Food Culture and Inspiring Sustainable Living
Sydney, Australia, is renowned for its multicultural diversity and vibrant food scene, traditionally centered around livestock-based cuisine. However, with the rise of a new generation that values environmental sustainability and personal health, plant-based diets are gaining increasing popularity. This aligns closely with Tzu Chi’s mission of promoting vegetarianism with compassion and encouraging a low-carbon lifestyle.
Each year around October, the “Love Food Fair” is held at Martin Place, bringing together food, sustainability, and community engagement. The event aims to promote healthy and sustainable eating while raising awareness of environmental protection, animal welfare, and personal well-being.
Organized by the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation and supported by the City of Sydney, the festival encourages participants to engage in kind actions toward the Earth, animals, and themselves through interactive booths and activities. A wide variety of multicultural food stalls and food trucks offer an array of plant-based dishes, catering to diverse tastes and dietary preferences.

Each year features a unique theme. In 2024, the theme “Kindness Bingo” highlighted elements of compassion. Led by volunteers such as Marco Barchmann, along with Wei Shufang and Wu Ruyu, a youth design team incorporated the “Vegan 21-Day Challenge” into the event. The festival also features live music performances and stage entertainment, creating a lively and meaningful atmosphere. In addition to enjoying vegetarian cuisine, visitors can access environmental education resources and participate in various stage activities.
Live performances by different artistic groups provide entertainment for all age groups, and the event is free of charge. Participants are encouraged to bring their own reusable utensils, with opportunities to enter prize draws and win food vouchers and eco-friendly products.

“As we bring the Love Food Fair to the heart of Sydney, we hope to offer the community an opportunity to experience delicious plant-based food while supporting local green dining initiatives,” said event coordinator Marco Barchmann. Volunteer Eugene Lubarsky added, “Through the combination of food, entertainment, and education, we aim to promote a greener and more sustainable food culture.”
