Since 2012, Tzu Chi Adelaide has implemented a systematic approach to promoting plant-based diets, a development shaped by global concerns over climate change, pressures on food systems, and the environmental impacts of animal-based consumption. The organisation’s long-standing principle of “protecting the Earth through vegetarianism” underpins this initiative, positioning everyday dietary choices as a form of environmental responsibility and ethical engagement with life. In response to issues such as global warming, resource depletion and food waste, volunteers advocate beginning “with what we eat”, using vegetarian food sales, campus outreach and community programmes to encourage reduced carbon footprints and foster a cycle of collective goodwill.

Tzu Chi's promotion of plant-based food not only embodies the ethical spirit of respecting life and protecting life, but also helps improve public health due to its natural, minimally processed diet. In addition, plant-based food promotion is frequently integrated with charitable fundraising, transforming dietary practices into resources for social support and community benefit. These factors collectively promote the expansion of plant-based culture and the improvement of health awareness.

Tzu Chi Adelaide’s activities demonstrate a diversified and collaborative model. The partnership with the Mount Barker District Council in environmental events such as tree planting days, using these platforms to advocate vegetarian principles. It also provides vegetarian meals to overseas Tzu Chi youth, particularly during examination periods. Festival-based events—including the Auspicious Month prayer ceremonies and year-end appreciation gatherings—serve as additional avenues for outreach. During the Auspicious Month, Tzu Chi also actively promotes vegetarian bento boxes to businesses around Chinatown, including banks, hair salons, and Chinese supermarkets, receiving positive feedback from these businesses. Fundraising efforts, such as the “United as One Heart” rice dumpling sale, the Mid Autumn mooncake sale and other vegetarian food sales, support both international disaster relief and local charity projects. Regular programmes, including annual winter and year-end distributions and twice-monthly community breakfasts, further reinforce the continuity of this work.

Tzu Chi Adelaide’s plant-based promotion has developed into a sustained initiative of more than a decade, expanding its social impact through the integration of education, environmental action and charity. As expressed in a Jing Si Aphorism, “Count your blessings, cherish them and sow more blessings.” Vegetarian practice thus becomes not only a dietary choice but a pathway toward environmental sustainability and collective goodwill.
