Disaster Relief

In early 2011, severe flooding struck the Brassall area of Ipswich, Queensland. Tzu Chi volunteers from the Gold Coast responded immediately, engaging in disaster assessment and relief efforts. In alignment with overall coordination, they seamlessly integrated local relief work with the broader Tzu Chi team, embodying the spirit of harmony, unity, and mutual support. Tirelessly traveling back and forth, volunteers actively connected with schools and local authorities to ensure that all assistance was delivered in a timely manner.
In the aftermath, volunteers visited Brassall State School, where they met with the principal and parent representatives to convey Master Cheng Yen’s care and blessings, while listening attentively to the community’s needs. Upon learning that all 720 school uniforms had been destroyed by the flood, volunteers promptly provided funding in Tzu Chi’s name for cleaning and restoration, enabling the children to return to school on schedule. At the same time, they continued to support both educational and daily needs by providing teaching materials, electrical appliances, sports equipment, and books—while sourcing locally to contribute to the community’s recovery.

At the start of the school term, volunteers arrived early to help clean the campus and warmly welcome teachers and students back. They prepared fruit juice loved by the children, bringing a sense of refreshment and reassurance amid the heat and post-disaster unease. In the months that followed, volunteers made repeated visits to assist in rebuilding the school library, donating a large number of books and personally arranging them on the shelves. Gradually, the once-empty learning space was restored to life, once again blossoming with warmth and hope.

Beyond material aid, volunteers also entered classrooms to share Jing Si Aphorisms, gently nurturing the children’s hearts and minds. From immediate post-disaster relief to ongoing, long-term care through regular school visits, fifteen years have passed since the floods. Through steadfast action, Tzu Chi volunteers have continued to safeguard Brassall State School, fostering a deep and enduring bond with the school community.
