Environmental protection on the Gold Coast: cutting carbon at the table

Since around 2009, Tzu Chi Gold Coast has actively championed vegetarianism as a vital path to reducing carbon emissions and protecting the Earth. Following the global outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, volunteers further intensified their efforts in response to Dharma Master Cheng Yen’s long-standing advocacy for safeguarding lives through a plant-based diet, seamlessly integrating environmental protection into their long-term community outreach.

Where the meals go, and to whom

In April 2020, the initiative began with weekly vegetarian lunchbox distributions to care for individuals experiencing homelessness in Southport. By May of the same year, this compassion expanded across regions to provide nutritious vegetarian meals to police officers in the Upper Mount Gravatt area of Brisbane, a dedicated service that ran continuously until its successful completion in December 2023.

To ensure sustained support, from July 2020 onwards, the meal delivery was regularised, with freshly prepared vegetarian lunchboxes delivered on the first Monday of each month to the Southport Police Station. In April 2022, the program expanded further to include the Emergency Departments and Ambulance Personnel at the Gold Coast Hospital. Ongoing to this day, these monthly distributions offer tangible appreciation to frontline workers while introducing them to healthy, eco-friendly dietary choices, providing a total of 880 lunchboxes throughout the year.

In addition to regular deliveries, Tzu Chi utilizes various opportunities throughout the year to promote vegetarianism across three major annual events.

These events successfully distribute more than 2,000 vegetarian lunchboxes annually, widening the reach of environmental advocacy and fostering collective goodwill within the broader community.

Through these consistent and enduring efforts, Tzu Chi Gold Coast not only comforts vulnerable groups and empowers frontline personnel but also fully implements Master Cheng Yen’s profound vision: 'Protect life through mindful eating, care for the Earth through our actions.
