Tzu Chi Collegiate Association (TCCA)

Youth inspiring compassionate action

Since 1996, the Tzu Chi Collegiate Association (TCCA) has brought youthful energy and dedication to the missions of Tzu Chi Melbourne, becoming an essential driving force in its development. While focusing on their academic pursuits, TCCA members have long committed themselves to community service and environmental initiatives, learning and growing through giving, and cultivating a deep sense of social responsibility.

As early as 1996, TCCA members began making regular visits to nursing homes, caring for the elderly through meaningful action. In 2000, they joined Clean Up Australia Day, participating in community clean-ups and coastal restoration efforts—an annual commitment they have upheld without interruption. In 2003, they organized their first Tzu Chi Youth Camp, bringing together young people with shared aspirations and inspiring more students to join TCCA. In 2009, they launched a battery recycling initiative to further promote environmental awareness. Beginning in 2010, they introduced after-school tutoring programs at Ardeer Primary School, supporting children from underprivileged families in improving their academic performance and building confidence.

As the association expanded, and inspired by Master Cheng Yen’s guidance—“If you wish for me to remain healthy and in this world, you must adopt a vegetarian diet”—TCCA began promoting “Veggie Week” on university campuses during the auspicious month in 2012. The initiative advocates healthy living and environmental sustainability and has continued every year without pause. During the COVID-19 pandemic, despite the challenges faced on campus, members adapted by promoting plant-based living online. In recent years, as conditions improved, they have returned to campuses to continue this meaningful tradition, ensuring that compassionate intentions endure.

With the growth of TCCA and the mentorship of alumni, members have continued to nurture the seeds of goodness in younger generations. They play an important role in humanistic education, guiding Tzu Shao (secondary school) and younger students in developing positive values. In 2021, TCCA members and alumni jointly established a Tzu Shao class, and in 2025 they organised their first Tzu You (primary) camp, further extending the cycle of goodness and intergenerational legacy.

Over the years, TCCA has consistently organized and participated in activities such as neighborhood clean-ups, tree planting, and nursing home visits. They have also actively supported free dental clinics, Vegetarian Week initiatives, and large-scale disaster relief efforts, including post-disaster clean-up and aid distributions. Both current members and alumni have become key pillars of Tzu Chi Melbourne, representing the emerging and mid-generation volunteers who shoulder the responsibility of advancing Tzu Chi’s missions.

Through generations of dedication and mentorship, TCCA continues to cultivate communities with the vitality of youth, allowing seeds of goodness to take root and flourish across campuses and society.
