Tara Medical Outreach

Tara is a small rural town about 300 km west of Brisbane, where many residents must travel more than an hour to access dental care. With a median weekly household income around half the state average, oral healthcare is often treated as a luxury rather than a necessity.

Tzu Chi volunteers first visited in 2007 and now return each Easter, transforming the community hall into a temporary health centre with more than 21 treatment rooms for dental, medical, physiotherapy, podiatry, optometry and acupuncture services. Among the most challenging—and most valued—services is on-site denture fabrication, restoring smiles and confidence within a short three-day visit.

In 2025, 147 volunteers, including 62 clinicians (doctors, dentists, allied health professionals and students), delivered 822 treatments with an in-kind value exceeding A$172,000.
