Humanistic Activities

Celebrating culture, compassion, and community together

Humanistic Activities

Since 2008, Tzu Chi volunteers on the Gold Coast have held three major annual humanistic events: the Lunar New Year Blessing Ceremony, the Buddha Bathing Ceremony, and the Auspicious Lunar July Blessing Ceremony. Through these events, they share the Dharma of Master Cheng Yen and promote Tzu Chi’s humanistic values, while fostering wholesome affinities within the community.

During the Lunar New Year Blessing Ceremony, volunteers and community members gather with sincere hearts to welcome the new year. Festive dragon and lion dances are often arranged to create a joyful atmosphere. Volunteers also introduce the Wisdom and Blessings Red Packets, which symbolise blessings and wisdom. These red packets originated from Master Cheng Yen’s decision to dedicate the royalties from her publications to benefit society, transforming them into meaningful tokens to share with the public—encouraging all to cultivate blessings and grow in wisdom in the year ahead.

The Buddha Bathing Ceremony, held each year in May, commemorates the birth of the Buddha. It is a profoundly meaningful occasion that unites Buddha Day, Mother’s Day, and Tzu Chi Day. On this day, Tzu Chi members around the world participate in synchronised ceremonies with reverence and devotion. Through the solemn ritual, participants are reminded to cleanse their hearts with the Dharma, while expressing gratitude for the Buddha, for their parents, and for all living beings.

In the seventh lunar month, Tzu Chi promotes the concept of the “Auspicious Month,” transforming the traditional notion of the “Ghost Month.” Master Cheng Yen teaches that this is a joyful and auspicious time, as well as a month to honor filial piety. Through these activities, people are encouraged to do good deeds, cultivate blessings, and awaken compassion—gathering collective goodwill to pray for and bring relief to those who are suffering in the world.

In recent years, volunteers have also warmly invited care recipients they regularly support to take part in these three major events. Together, they sing Tzu Chi songs like a harmonious and heartfelt choir. Through music and blessings, they accompany and encourage one another, allowing Tzu Chi’s spirit of humanistic care to continue flowing and taking root within the community.
